What Are the Predictions for VoIP?

11 10 2008

The top dogs are betting that consumers will soon change how they make phone calls reducing the need for a phone line from a traditional provider. VoIP essentially turns telephone calls into data which is transferred via an IP network, and due to this simplicity the future for VoIP seems promising.

Ever since Skype introduced software for voice calls on computers the industry has been buzzing. Google has entered the Voice over IP industry with an IM and voice application and is testing a wireless customer service that has the potential to deliver data to wireless devices.

The electronics companies are already starting to launch double purpose products such as digital cameras that appear to be a normal digital camera but when a person slides the back of the device down, there’s a keypad for making calls. Memory sticks preloaded with a softphone are also now available. They come with a microphone and earphones.

Companies such as Google, Yahoo, and EarthLink have already played around with such technology. Last spring Yahoo added improved Voice over IP calling to its Yahoo Messenger. Google has also released Google Talk. AOL announced it would be offering its VoIP service called TotalTalk. AOL’s TotalTalk will essentially let people replace their traditional landlines. It has advanced communication features, such as unified voice, e-mail and instant messaging, and call-management.

It could be argued the phone companies will face a huge challenge with these drastic changes coming to the fore with VoIP technology.

Whose Your Guitar Hero?

10 10 2008

Video games are getting better and better every year. I can still remember the Commodore 64 and the Atari with the two joy sticks. I can’t even count the hours we spent playing those old beasts. Now with the Nintendo Wii and the Guitar Hero we’re actually getting games that are interactive. The graphics are almost as cool as this weight loss video.

Just last Christmas we all gathered at the family shindig like we normally would and it was a complete one eighty from any other holiday we’ve ever had. It really was pretty neat the way the video game brought the family together.

Normally at our family gatherings there is a division of the fun and the not so fun families within our family. Not a whole lot of socialization goes on between the two halves during the normal get together. But with my cousin getting the Wii it all changed.

The stiffs as we call them actually wanted in on the action. They wanted to participate and be part of the family for once. Definitely a pleasant change from the norm. Even though all we did was bowl, it definitely brought us closer as a family. If you did it enough it might get you ready for swim suit season like in one of my favorite videos you can watch.

Who knows, if the video games this year are as good as guitar hero and the Wii interactive games, I might even start to like those not so fun uncles that I’ve had to put up with for the past few decades.

Large Brands Seize Gaming Laptops Opportunity

10 08 2008

Do you remember when gaming portables were a special product? The sales were never very good but they did provide more mark up’s on each system than others. I think numerous people would agree they always wanted a laptop for gaming however it was just out of bounds for the masses. They were basically desktop replacements and the quickest, best laptop computer you could purchase. They most likely were not huge sellers though because I believe us people buy laptop computers that we can effortlessly afford. Sales will increase though now that larger companies are getting into the sector.

Gaming notebooks are normally not affordable by most people and global companies know they can exploit the high profit margins even further with their economies of scale. These companies have probably been losing a bit of cash on cheap units so this should be an attractive opportunity. Persuading buyers to buy laptop computers is sort of effortless for bigger companies. I’m pretty sure that littler retailers will be forced to drop their prices in order to compete. Now prospects will have greater choice it makes it difficult for the small system builders. I think buying from a well know brand additionally gives the perception of greater value for money.

In my point of view these companies are churning out the best laptop computers at this point in time. I believe this would still be the ray of hope for local manufacturers though. People like the service to customise because they can select what’s most valuable to them. Typically a lot of comparisons of the tech specs will be carried out and the tech savvy can judge what the superior portable actually is. For these types of purchasers, the speed of a notebook sometimes mean more than the looks of it.

All the changes are extremely beneficial from the customers view. As this drives down the prices even greater, new technology will become increasingly attainable to the market. Although that’s my take on it, its just my point of view and quite possibly not what will happen. The best laptop computers are most likely going to be expensive to be telling the truth. The global brands have already entered the gaming laptop computers niche so we’ll have to wait and observe what happens I guess.

I think this site (http://www.rizeon.com) are pretty inexpensive for the laptops they are selling.

Scottish Bill incriminates Explicit Communication

24 06 2008

Scottish mobile users may be in jeopardy for incrimination, due to their violation of the Sexual Offences Bill. The Scottish residents are being tried for illicit communications through text messages and emails, with the use of their mobile broadband. The new legislation commenced by the Scottish government will result in strong penalties for those who were incriminated. If sexual messages were regarded as humiliation for the recipient, the communication is considered as an illegal offence.

The recent bill is an uncompromised revision as part of the sex crime legislation which exists across Scotland. The bill requires that those who violate the laws face large penalization, facing up to ten years of hard jail time. The legislation’s purpose is to create a legal framework to oppose sexual crimes. The bill will become iffy as to its criticality. Deciding at which point flirting becomes criminal activity. It will most likely cause a remorse for those who commit such activity, most of which consist of male users.

The court considers any such message as one which causes a resulting emotional feeling to the recipient. Any unsolicited message which is designed to release sexual gratification, humiliation, or distress, can be deemed as unethical; resulting in criminal investigation of the issue. The new legislation also ceases the deployment of pornographic material between subscribers, whether or not the recipients wish to receive it.

Video Projector Rentals

8 06 2008

A video projector is a device that projects a video or computer image onto a screen. The commonly used inputs are video cassette players, CD and DVD players and PowerPoint presentations from computers. Some computers have CD as well as DVD drives which support these discs. Some projectors don’t have VGA connectors, which take inputs from a computer.

A video projector employs one of three technologies: CRT, LCD and DLP. CRT projectors are just like television, i.e. they employ cathode ray tubes. The limitations of CRT video projectors are the heavy size and the requirement of absolute darkness for clarity of the picture. LCD projectors employ a special chip so that the advantage is that the projector is very compact. Besides, it has excellent contrast and brightness. The LCD projector employs individual pixels, which produces high resolution. The limitation of a LCD is it produces a screen door effect. Also the repair of one would result in a dark spot on the screen.

DLP technology employs a Digital Micromirror Device, instead of a chip. DLP projectors are highly suitable for viewing movies and also other multimedia presentations. The advantages of DLP projector include color accuracy and no screen door effect.

LCD and DLP video projectors are the favorites and therefore most of the inventory of the rental companies are the above mentioned ones. The rates of these projectors start at $100 and are dependent upon factors such as the resolution and weight. The rental companies provide support throughout the whole day and night. This includes online or phone booking, shipment, installation, and operation support.

Hotels, resorts, convention centers and conference halls enter into contract with rental companies to provide these services. The rental companies have chains of shops across a particular region or nationwide networks. The directories of these service providers can be obtained online, which directs them to the individual websites.

Who is Fixing Your PC?

3 06 2008

You may think that it’s ok just to invite someone in to your home to fix your PC, without really checking them out. After all, it’s not gas we’re talking about is it? Well, there are several important things to consider which you might not have thought about.

The majority of viruses on a PC arise due to the user and if your engineer isn’t qualified they could end up doing more harm than good. Even more worrying is that someone with the right equipment could download some of your most personal information in a few seconds, for their own use, and you would never know.

CompTIA, the UK’s best known computer engineer training organisation, provide the training necessary to ensure that all engineers who possess the A+ qualification are bound by the Data Protection Act and, of course, have the technical skills to do the job correctly. In addition to qualifications, you need to be aware of insurance, of which there are two types: public liability and professional indemnity.

Public liability insures against any damage to you or your property caused by the engineer. Some engineers may not be covered at all or only be insured for domestic premises and not business premises, which carries a higher risk and cost.
Professional indemnity is there to insure against negligence on the part of the engineer, obviously important when someone is working on your PC, especially if you are a business customer and your company relies on the use of the PC and associated data! This insurance is quite expensive and so some engineers may not be covered for this either.

PC PAL only use fully qualified and fully insured engineers with the experience and knowledge to solve all your PC problems, giving you peace of mind.
We all know about pirate software, and this is rife amongst the industry. If your engineer is telling you they can provide you with an up-to-date installation at a very cheap price, be sure to check and ask for the product registration key, as well as the original software discs, to be provided to you.

A recommendation is obviously the best way to find a new engineer so ask for testimonials or references from previously satisfied customers. A professional website is also useful to find out more. So, the next time you reach for the telephone, make sure you ask plenty of questions of the engineer before they arrive on your doorstep!
If you would like any help with your PC, contact PC PAL on our 7-day helpline on: 0121 705 0010 or see our website at http://www.pcpal.co.uk for full details of services and to view our customer testimonials.

Jat Mann is the owner of PC PAL, the PC repair specialists. PC PAL currently operate in the Solihull area, offering customers a fully qualified, experienced and insured engineer to fix their computer in their own home or office. Dark Night Sky: Olbers Paradox

24 04 2008

It was long before science became compartmentalized. Professions could freely intermingle and overlap. Wilhelm Olbers was a German physician who enjoyed exploring the night sky with his telescope. His work on comets and asteroids earned him a fairly respectable niche in astronomy, still he continued to be a physician. But something about the night sky kept bothering him. Almost towards the end of this career he brought it in the open. In 1826 he wrote a paper and asked the question - Why is the sky dark at night?

Until then and even through the nineteenth century it was generally believed that the universe was infinite with infinite number of stars. Newton argued in its favor and explained why it should be so. Newton’s eminence and stature notwithstanding Olbers was not convinced. He reasoned that if there were infinite number of stars, the sky would be covered with stars. No matter how far they were the cumulative effect of the star light would ultimately make the sky as bright as the sun. Yet the night sky is dark.

Olbers was the first to address the scientific community with this problem and this is known as Olbers paradox. It turns out though that a Swiss astronomer Cheseaux had made the same observation half a century ago and had mentioned it in his book. Apparently Olbers never read that book and came upon the idea on his own. He tried a couple of explanations but found them unsatisfactory. Finally he assumed that the light from the stars was absorbed by the interstellar gas and rested his case. Later though it turned out that this explanation would not fit either. The interstellar gas will be eventually heated to bright glow and the sky will be again as bright as the sun. So the paradox remained unresolved.

A century after Olbers had put his question Edwin Hubble discovered the expansion of the universe from the observation of redshifts. The answer to the question was: the sky is not dazzling bright because the universe is spending its energy in expanding. The radiation from the galaxies and stars is mostly dumped into the redshift. Whatever remains is so thinned out over the vast distance as to be negligible. The night sky thus remains dark.

Redshift is the term used for the shift of the frequency of light towards the red end of the spectrum due to the source moving away from the observer. This occurs due to a phenomenon known as Doppler Effect. The frequency emitted by a source increases if it is approaching and decreases if it is receding. For example the whistle from an approaching train becomes higher pitched if it is approaching and lower pitched if it is moving away. In the case of visible light the two ends of the spectrum are blue and red. For stars or galaxies approaching the earth the spectral lines will have a blueshift, for those receding they will have redshift. All distant galaxies show redshifts directly depending on their distance, which shows that the universe is expanding.

TalkDigits : For All

7 04 2008

How does it work?

It is only natural for people to have a desire to know the
functioning of any service which they are contemplating to
avail. After all how does the service that claims to cater to
your requirements work. The functioning of talkdigits is very
simple to understand. To make it even simpler we have decided to
explain it in two ways “Technical and Non-technical” for
everyone cocerned to uderstand it completely.

Non-Technical

Suppose your friend calls you on your talkdigits phone number.
As soon as the call is made, Gnome takes over and converts your
voice into data. Then the call is forwarded to your cellphone,
or to your computetr, or to your fax, depending on how you are
using your talkdigits.

Technical

You can download optional software and turn your PC into a
phone. Users can purchase an optional telephone adaptor that
turns any phone into a full fledged VoIP phone.

As soon as the call is made to a talkdigits number it is
converted into data which is then send through the Internet. The
call reaches its destination via DSL or cable modem. The call is
sent to optional phone adaptor which converts the voice back to
analog. The adaptor allows to make and receive calls using
normal telephone. Calls can be made and received on your PC
using free software. Calls can also be made and received on
telephone through phone adaptor.
