Despite the amount of media-bashing anabolic steroids have received over the years, it may surprise you to learn that there are legitimate medical uses for muscle building hormones. In males, testicular cancer often requires the removal of the testes. After surgery, these men are often prescribed anabolic steroids to replace the testosterone that their bodies are no longer able to synthesize. This form of replacement therapy helps preserve the men’s musculature as well as such secondary sex characteristics as body hair, deep voice, and sex drive (which are some of the side effects anabolic steroids produce in bodybuilders.
There are also medical steroids for teens with hormone conditions. Adolescent males with pituitary problems can be treated with anabolic steroids when they reach the appropriate age for puberty. Anabolic steroids are usually given for four to six months to initiate the growth spurt and development of secondary sex characteristics.
After certain kinds of surgery and cancer, most patients experience a loss of muscle tissue. Anabolic steroids can be used in such cases, with exercise and diet, to promote the regaining of lean muscle tissue without serious side effects.
A final use for anabolic steroids is to see if one day they may be used as male oral contraceptives. Unfortunately the amount of negative press that steroids have received over the past number of years severely hampers this promising area of research.

Other articles in this series looked at a number of exercises, mainly from the perspective of developing a comprehensive muscle building program. Sometimes we take things for granted, especially when it comes to performing the basic exercises that constitute the core of most bodybuiders’ training regimes.
It is useful, therefore, to describe in detail the processes involved in actually doing these exercises. This will help beginners to start out using the correct techniques before moving on to potentially more dangerous heavy weights. If it also helps more experienced lifters to redress some of the little faults that have almost imperceptibly crept in over the years, all the better.
In this article we’ll take a close look at the standing calf raise.
MUSCLES TARGETED: gastrocnemius
STARTING POSITION
Face the machine, place the balls of the feet on the near edge of the step.
Move under the shoulder pads and stand erect with the hips under the shoulders.
Position the feet and legs parallel to each other with the toes pointing straight ahead.
Extend the knees and allow the heels to hang off the step.
UPWARD MOVEMENT
Push up on the toes as high as possible.
Keep the torso erect, legs and feet parallel and knees extended.
Push up off the step.
Do not lock the knees.
DOWNWARD MOVEMENT
Allow the heels to slowly lower back to the starting position.
Repeat or finish set.
