Google To Pull Nexus One Off Online Sales Platform
4 06 2010
With online sales failing to meet expectations, Google has announced its decision to withdraw the Nexus One purchase option from the website. The company hopes to make up for lost sales by bringing the Nexus One to direct sales outlets.
The Nexus One handset was launched in January this year. Although the handset’s platform, the Android OS, found widespread acceptance globally, the sales of the actual product did not quite pick up as well as predicted. In fact, the Android OS’s popularity has overshot expectations by a significant margin while the sales of Nexus One have remained well below target.
Google sources now believe that the online sales has not become popular with customers because it does not allow them to actually see, feel and try the handset before making a purchase decision. This failing is sought to be addressed by bringing Nexus One to conventional direct sales outlets where visitors to the outlet can have a hands-on trial of the handset.
Company sources have stated that Google will now follow its European sales strategy by tying up with partners to offer Nexus One through their outlets. Once the handsets have been positioned adequately in the market, the online sales will be withdrawn.
Poor sales aside, it must be remembered that the Nexus One technology has been well received. This is evidenced by the fact that two new models, the HTC Evo 4G from Sprint and the Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC, have borrowed significantly from the design and technology used in this product.
