You Need to Do More than Call

31 12 2009

There are a few recognizable poker skills that separate the truly amazing players from the herds of average players that normally flood the casino floor. One the key features is that the top notch poker players know that they need to do more than call. They need to take the next step and raise the stakes if they want to win the big bucks.

Let’s look at the basics about the call versus the raise. An average player knows when they should call. This is one of those skills that even the home grown poker player can learn just by reading poker websites or looking through well thumbed poker books at their local library. Many new players actually end up calling so much that they get dubbed “calling stations” by their more competent counterparts. This should be considered a dreaded name for any player.

The truly great players know that constant calling is reactionary instead of proactive. You need to be able to call so that you can take advantage of the circumstances for your economic game. If you can’t do that, then you are really just watching the game take place instead of interacting with it. You need to learn to manipulate the game through calling to win consistently.
