Business and Eco-Efficiency: Henry Kravis of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. And the Environmental Defense Fund
31 12 2009Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was launched in the mid seventies and orginally their focus was in highly leveraged transactions. But going beyond, in the pursuit of making their portfolio companies and acquisitions have less environmental impact, KKR have set up an unusual green project which has fundamentally changed the way businesses and environmental groups operate. KKR’s Henry Kravis and the non-profit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) joined forces a year ago, with the intention of making environmentally aware business operation a commonplace concept. Their mission is to encourage firms to fight against operations which may jeopardize the environment such as greenhouse gas emissions not to forget any absurd water consumption.
Eco-efficiency (the term was first promoted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development) is the routine deployed to achieve these objectives, by using techniques such as maximum use of renewable resources, reducing the waste of resources and waste reduction. Simple and effective, nevertheless the companies involved did not realize the range of the benefits of the program until Ken Mehlman, the person responsible for the Green Portfolio Project, studied the project when it had been up and running for a year.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Ken realized that using eco-efficiency not only enhanced environmental responsibility, but also increased the profitability of every last company as well. Almost all of the companies affiliated to KKR and Ken Mehlman at present are involved in eco-efficiency techniques. Seeing that this group of business concerns is worth almost one hundred billion dollars, you can see what an enormous achievement this really was.
The Green Portfolio project has developed beyond its basic purpose and currently encompasses new ventures. For instance, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co joined the EDF’s Climate Corps Program which teaches students studying for an MBA how to promote cost-efficient, green principles. In addition, Ken Mehlman has been in close collaboration with Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co to produce systems which all sorts of businesses can employ to evaluate and manage a number of resources. These products can track an organization’s progress and identify any problem areas.
Henry Kravis, the KKR, and the Environmental Defense Fund are true groundbreakers when it comes ecologically friendly business techniques. So, in conclusion, the work of these organizations has made green business techniques not only viable, but commercially desirable, and their novel ideas are setting a new standard in today’s community.
