Human Resources Management: a Few Important Points

27 09 2009

A successful business depends on efficient people management skills. With a little effort you may succeed in learning these skills. It can be a plus to have a innate affinity for people, but there are a few things you can do that will simplify the process.

Developing relationships: Remembering co-workers by name will be a good start. Speak to staff; get eye contact during a conversation. Show respect, and pay attention to the other person’s point of view, even if you disagree or have another opinion. Listening to what staff say is one of the most crucial human resource management skills in your arsenal. Welcome any contributions from team members.

Keep your word: Don’t give promises you can’t fulfill. If your word is not kept, it can damage trust, and if they can’t trust you people will not give you their best. Everytime you say something or make a promise about something, you are squandering your time unless you follow through. To be honest, if you can’t be depended upon, you can be assured they will act in a similar manner. Encourage feedback: It’s a two way street. Talent management skills mean having an open mind to all feedback. Being accessible and open proves that you respect your co-worker’s opinions, your thoughts will be appreciated in return. Welcoming discourse also promotes development of creative problem solving, new ways of fulfilling the mission of the team, and strengthens the team. By allowing the team to voice their thoughts, the project will become important to each employee.

Communicating is the key: Your people management skills boil down to the same thing - communication. Maintaining an open door policy, utilize good listening techniques, remember to welcome feedback , and allow each of your team members to express their opinions. Employees should be encouraged to talk to each other as well as with you. The growth of a business depends to a great extent on the open exchange of opinions, if the employees communicate openly, you can root out any problems early, allowing corrective measures to be put in place to prevent further problems.

Some time and effort will be needed, all the same the payoff is worthwhile. By promoting a good team dynamic and demonstrating effective listening techniques, a flourishing business can be accomplished.
