To Optimize Or Not To Optimize

31 07 2008

Excessive optimization could be considered a sickness depending on context. Look up compulsive disorders in the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) and over- optimization fits the description fairly well. So, should most online home business owners be seen by a psychotherapist? Well, I won’t answer that as of now since it doesn’t bode well for my immediate physical health. But one thing is for sure: web site optimization is tricky business.

The search engines are in an all out war to be the best. Since content is king, they are all striving to develop the all around best algorithm to deliver the most relevant search results. They are thus in a constant state of flux, which in turn wreaks havoc on our nerves as online home business owners.

You see, search engines are one of the best forms of free traffic. And we all know that to run a successful online business, traffic is a must. Most home based web businesses start out on very restrictive budgets. I know mine did, and still is. So, when the toss up is time or money, I, like many others probably do, chose to work with time.

In walks optimization. You must be on your toes to stay ahead of the every changing SEs. You must periodically evaluate your site’s content to ensure that you aren’t bumped to low indexes. But this can easily get carried away into what I like to call over-optimization, and then you probably should consult the DSM- V.

Traffic is important. There is no doubt about it. But there must be a balance. So the ultimate question is not whether you should or shouldn’t optimize, but how much time you should spend on it in terms of other site promotion methodologies.

Try to divide your time. In the beginning I focused heavily on search engine optimization. Slowly, after several months of realizing that the process never ends,(I too consulted the DSM-V and had Freud give me a swift kick in the tushy.) my focus began to shift to a host of promotion techniques. Here is a short list of some of the primary traffic generators I work with.

(1) Writing articles, such as this one, to share my experiences with others and of course provide a link to my site at the end. Guess what? If someone picks it up and decides to publish any of my articles on their site, I get bonus points from the search engines. Why? Reciprocal linking of course. The link shows that someone else values my site, and as a result my ranking increases.

(2) E-Zine advertising, whether it be free classified ads which a host of publishers will offer their subscribers, or full blown paid solo ads, is a great traffic generator. You know that the people who visit your site through an ad were looking for something that you offer. Now that’s targeted traffic!

(3) Traffic exchanges can also bring in targeted traffic. Many of these have the option of free or paid memberships. As of now I have focused on the free aspect (Remember, I love low, or no cost advertising.). All that is required is for you to do a bit of surfing to have your short ad show up on other sites across the internet. TrafficSwarm and ClickMatrix are two of the best I have come across. They allow you to target your ad to ensure that the people who click are serious about checking out your site. You can sign up for free accounts to both of these at http://www.trafficswarm.com/go.cgi?224700 , and http://www.clicksmatrix.com/index.php?ref=ekinetic .

(4) Pay-per-click can also drive targeted traffic. The thing I don’t care for is that the cost can easily get out of hand, if you don’t continuously evaluate your click through rates on a daily basis. Soon your back to focusing on pay-per-click and re- consulting with the DSM-V:).

Ultimately, you want to incorporate a handful of techniques that you find work for your particular home based web business. I nor anyone else can guarantee what works. It takes testing on your behalf. But, and this is important, the testing phase is educational and forces you to stay focused on methods that work. So try the inexpensive traffic builders first. Find out what works for you. Then expand your arsenal. Most of all, be patient and success will come!

Starting Your Small Business

28 07 2008

Where do you find more customers?

How do you compete with bigger businesses?

Answer. Build loyalty and rewards.

You may not have the money to
spend on advertising like your competitors do but you
don’t need it. What you need is added exposure,
added exposure that costs little or none.

One of the best ways is referrals. Getting referrals from your
customers reinforces new customers that they
should choose you because they can trust you and they will
be satisfied. A good way to track your referrals is to build a list and rank it. You can develop a database of your most loyal customers and the products they buy. How many are repeat customers? How many times per month/year are they repeat customers. Assemble this information and rank it to ensure you are spending your time wisely with your best customers.

Join local events. Get involved in your community.
Being involved in one event may spell the difference
between increased cash flow or stagnation.

You must remember that you are one of many businesses that
the customer can chose. You must give them an
incentive. Once you give them an incentive, reward
them and reinforce that they have made the right
decision. Actively pursing them to give you leads of
other people with the same problem or people that
may be in their industry and simply contacting them
will be a great start! Until next month.

Are You Measuring The Right Outcomes?

27 07 2008

How many minutes are in a year? My niece, Sarah, and her third grade classmates sang a song from the Broadway show, “Rent.” The song breaks down how many minutes are in a year and asks us how many ways we count a year. It’s catchy. I’ve been humming the song all day, but I don’t remember how many minutes it turned out to be.

Measuring is important. Figuring out what to measure is even more important. I just finished speaking about precise communication. I can’t imagine a more precise way to communicate than through exact quantities. How many times must something happen to know that it is successful? How much money must you earn to cover the cost of an endeavor? How much time is needed to determine when something is working or not working?

There is no key to answering those questions. Your comfort level will determine how much of a risk you want to take. It will also determine when you do your measurements. I developed a terrible habit a few years ago. I learned to do all of my banking and trading on the internet and I became obsessed with the movement of money. I put a lot of energy into trying to do the right things but all it did was cause anxiety. Some information is not meant for daily consumption.

Working with government agencies taught me to plan ahead for measurements. Daily feedback was fed into monthly reports which were then compiled into annual reports. Summaries were distributed and a major piece of the full story of our efforts was available for all to see. It wasn’t the whole story, but numbers can tell you a lot.

After an organization has finished their mission statement, the next question is “How will you know when you have achieved your goals?” I always suggest having some quantity in mind. How many calls did you answer? How many people did you serve? How much money did you make? The biggest mistake that an organization can make is having ideals with no ideas.

Statements like “We want to help educate our community” and “We want to help single mothers” are common. How will you help? What services will you offer? How often? To how many? Effectively serving people means that you have to be realistic about your capacity to serve. No one has unlimited physical resources, in fact, one of the best ways to measure your capacity is to look at your resources. Personally, I never count anything that I don’t have yet. You can always add things and expand, but its very difficult to recover when you have exhausted all of your resources.

The biggest complaint that I hear from churches that are growing is that the employees and volunteers are overworked. The church’s effort grew faster than expected or involved many tasks that no one anticipated. In my work with those churches, I find that the big picture of “helping humanity” blinds the decision makers to nurturing talent and reserving energy.

Beginning with the end in mind is crucial, no one should lose sight of the goals. Bringing someone like me in to break down tasks and insert evaluation tools is also important, but its not nearly as exciting. Yes, I can be a buzz killer, but someone has to keep in mind that you are in it for the long haul. Doing everything right now will not work when you don’t have everybody and everything you need.

Organizations need guidance to grow in a positive direction. We have all seen the rapid decline of very good ideas. There are ways to determine if you are on the right track before your growth is out of control. How you measure this year will be different than how you measure next year. New people and new resources will likely send you in directions that you cant even imagine right now. Patience and even a tiny commitment to precision can make a world of difference from the beginning.

I pulled out my calculator - 525, 600 minutes. That’s how many minutes are in a year. Now I know that I am humming the right tune.

What happens to the eyelids to make them look aged?

27 07 2008

This excess skin can occur above the eyes in the upper eyelids or below the eyes in the lower eyelids. Extra skin and puffy eyelids can be present simply from being born with a tendency to form baggy eyelids.

Saggy, stretched skin can also form as part of the aging process. Medical conditions like sinusitis or recurrent allergies can cause repeated swelling and contraction around the eyes as well. As skin stretches and descends, extra tissue accumulates around the eyes. Furthermore, the firm tissue that normally holds back the natural fat pads around the eyes can also stretch. The weakening of this tissue allows the fat pockets around the eyes to bulge forward, causing puffy bags to form around the eyes in conjunction with the hanging, loose skin.

The goal of Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery, or Blepharoplasty is to revitalize droopy and puffy eyelids so that the appearance of the eyes communicates the energy and vitality that one feels inside. A good candidate for blepharoplasty wants to restore a more youthful and rested appearance to their eyes. Droopy or baggy eyes communicate to others a sense of fatigue, disinterest, and senescence. Many people simply don’t want their face to express to others these qualities when they feel quite the opposite about themselves. The best candidate for cosmetic eyelid surgery wants their appearance to better communicate their feelings of youth, energy, and vitality.

Globalization - Economic Dimension

24 07 2008

In simple terms, the phenomenon of ‘globalization’ is perceived as increased inter-connectedness of the world (Papers4you.com, 2006). However there are three primary defining pillars of globalization that includes cultural, political and economic dimensions (Potter, 2002). It was argued that ‘cultural globalization’ is increasing convergence of cultural styles on a global norm, with that norm being codified and defined by the global capitalist system. Now cultural values and norms are shared and adopted among people in a way where we are giving rise to one global culture. Similarly it was asserted that ‘political globalization’ is regarding as erosion of the former role and power of the nation-state.

On the other hand, Potter (2002:192) defines ‘economic globalization’ as economy where “distance has become less important to economic activities, so that large countries sub-contract to branchplants in far distant regions, effectively operating within a ‘borderless’ world”. However Inoguchi (2001) attempted to differentiate between international and global economy. International economy suggests importance of national economies working as units under national states as a result the international economy concerns activities that take place among various ‘national economies’. However global economy describes unity of globe where geographical distance is no longer obstacle to economic activities. It also implies aggregation of the movement of goods and services worldwide together with their concomitant activities including movement of technology information and currencies without ‘tyranny of distance’.

The economic globalization was flourished in 1990s and many examples can be taken to validate this argument (Papers4you.com, 2006). For instance Western European integration was first step towards economic globalization by European countries through signing Maastricht Treaty in 1991 that lead to creation of single market in 1992 and set base for European Union that was on full operation in 1999. Similarly 12 members of European Community and seven members of EFTA formed European Economic Area for free trade including 380 million people and accounted for 40% of world trade (Meredith & Dyster, 1999).

How ever it was the signature on First Act Embodying the Results of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations in April, 1994 that developed the official foundation of first real concept of borderless global economy (LeQuesene, 1996). The primary aim of Uruguay Round was finalizing ways to reduce tariff barriers in developed countries as well as reduce non tariff barriers like elimination of safeguarding, antidumping restrictions and voluntary export restraint (Meredith & Dyster, 1999:291). Currently, WTO is a body looking after ensuring economic globalization primarily through trade liberalization.

These attempts resulted in boom of what is known as ‘global economic convergence’, that is ‘global integration of product’ (through world’s top manufacturing companies’ global operations by conducting planning, production and joint research with companies of myriad nationalities and outside their home countries) and financial markets through currency trading, baking and loans and investment in bonds and equity leading towards global homogenization (Kenworthy, 1997).

One Way To Buy A Cheap House

24 07 2008

One of the simplest ways to buy a cheap house is to make a low offer. Sometimes called a “lowball” offer, this is a basic ploy used in real estate and many other negotiations. Everyone knows the technique, but most are afraid to use it. It can be a waste of time if you don’t do it right, and it can be embarrassing, but it also can get you a cheap house.

A very successful real estate investor once told me,”If you aren’t embarrassed by your offer, it isn’t low enough.” He’s made millions in real estate, so I think he’s worth listening to. However, you need to understand that a truly low offer isn’t going to be accepted most of the time.

In fact, it will almost never be accepted. Does this mean it is a waste of time? Not at all! There will often be counter-offers, and a low initial offer is just a way to alter expectations.

Buy A Cheap House By Lowering Expectations

Once, when I was selling my car, a really nice guy looked at it. After crawling under and inside the car, he politely offered me half of what I was asking, and left his phone number (I said no). I wondered what was wrong with the car, and I found myself hoping I could get just a bit more than that half-price offer. My expectations had been altered quickly. Fortunately for me another person gave me the full asking price before I decided to pick up that phone.

The idea of a low offer then, is to alter expectations. If a seller is asking $200,000, and you offer $160,000, will he accept your offer? No. He’ll almost certainly reject it. Buying a cheap house isn’t going to be as easy as that.

However, he may counter-offer. Now suppose you go back and forth, and eventually agree to $182,000. He not have considered going this low before, but now it seems like victory to him after starting at $160,000.

The downside? You will lose a lot of potential homes this way. Some sellers won’t even take subsequent offers seriously once you have offended them with your extreme offer. This then, is a technique to use when you have time to find that home, and really want the best deal you can get.

One investor in California routinely made dozens of offers at a time on houses. He didn’t even look at them, but wrote the offers for 25% less than the asking price (he did include an inspection contingency to protect himself). Most of the sellers said no - most, but not all. He repeatedly got great deals in this way. That’s one way to buy a cheap house.

Steve Gillman has invested in real estate for years. To learn more, get a free real estate investing course, and see a photo of a beautiful house he and his wife bought for $17,500, visit http://www.HousesUnderFiftyThousand.com

Keeping Your Home Organized

22 07 2008

Now…as much of a challenge as it was to do all of that pitching, organizing, and cleaning, how do you maintain it and not let your stuff overwhelm you again?

There are some easy steps to takeand they just take moments a day. Please don’t email me and tell me you’re too busy to do this because of your special situationeveryone can find the time to take 15 minutes a day and maintain their home in stages. If you can’t, then I’m going to brashly suggest that you re-evaluate your schedule and determine what IS more important than maintaining your home for your family.

Maintaining the Kitchen

Daily, put dirty dishes in your dishwasher or dishpan under the sink. When either is full, do the dishes. If you run your dishwasher while you’re asleep at night, you’ll pay lower utility rates and the dishes will be cool and clean in the morningready to be put away.

Run a rag with the cleaner of your choice over the countertops and tabletop once a day. This will take you just moments, yet will help keep your kitchen organized and neat. You don’t have to scrub or take everything off the counters, just wipe where you’ve cooked or eaten.

Clean your sink daily. Scrub it with a soap pad or use some window cleaner and a ragif your sink is clean, you’re less likely to let dirty dishes pile up in it.

Sweep your floors once a week. Just take a broom across it and get the big crumbs. Then run a damp mop over it to get the week’s dirt washed offyou don’t have to shine it, just a damp mop (the type is your choice).

Maintaining the Living Room Areas

Pick up the papers that land on your Flat Surfaces and either throw them away or file them appropriately in the study every evening. If you are diligent about keeping the papers picked up, your room will appear much more organized and clean, even if you haven’t done any deep cleaning.

Dust once a weekrun your duster over the flat surfaces. It’s a 5 minute job that will make a large dent in your room(s).

Vacuum once a week. Don’t move furniture or pull out the crevice tools, just do the middles where you walk. 15 minutes, max.

Take your glass cleaner and go over the TV screen and any other glass that collects fingerprints once a week. 3 minutes, tops.

Just doing quick and easy tasks gives you the push to get started. That’s the key when it comes to staying organized. Once you get going, things get done!

The Flourishing World Wide Real Estate Market Place — Simplified by The Property Index Online Company

22 07 2008

Property Index - for the best help in international properties investment.

Though PropertyIndex.com is really a newcomer concern, (they were incorporated only in March of 2007), they have quickly achieved expert status. They are a quite unceremonious concern exclusively focused on offering experienced guidance to everyone who is dedicated to buy, sell, etc. property across the globe. What they agree to do is be of help to you to unearth just what you require fast not to mention without hassle. Property is available all over the place in our times, one of the most exclusive areas being property you can purchase in France. It should be dead easy to determine the wonderful property available for sale in France, the argument for looking for properties here is the houses and apartments for sale and the good option of living surrounded by such a lively, keen and dynamic population.

It is one of the most trendy markets in our times, and in view of the beauty and the great weather that surrounds you all year long, how can you say no. Property in France is rich in history, this part of the world has a long tradition as a home to various sophisticated cultures. About 30 years ago there’d be just a trickle of Britishers looking for property in France. Ask any individual who has moved to France and they’ll be sure to confirm this. Most people would will insist on viewing it as a rage and others will insist on viewing it as a that’s quite a compulsion… People intent on migrating to this area extend from young urban professionals who are looking for a challenge to older people looking to enjoy themselves and relax.

Note that there can be catches when looking to purchase property abroad: there are a hundred disparate, rather complex, steps be it when organising, surveying or finalizing the deal. Even if one minor procedure is missed this is sure to definitely provoke comprehensive catches plus, of course, even more importantly, financial loss. As everyone would suppose with this favored area, property may well be quite high priced in this destination which is absolutely a consequence of the growing market demand. This notwithstanding, the real estate buyer doubtlessly is pretty spoiled in an area characterized by sensational geography and warm scenery. It’s presently got all, stock and barrel, a buyer may really want and then some.
